– Total population over 65: approximately 3.7 million (18.5%)
– Single seniors (unmarried/divorced/widowed): Estimated 15-20% of 65+ population
– Gender distribution: More elderly women (approx 56%) than men
– Roughly 555,000 to 740,000 single elders
– Higher proportion of single women due to longer life expectancy
– Urban areas: Higher concentration of single seniors
– Rural regions: More traditional family structures, fewer single elders
Economic Factors:
– Average pension: Approximately €250-300 per month
– High risk of poverty among single elderly
– Limited social support infrastructure
